NESTA FUTUREFEST

Building a path to the future

FutureFest is Nesta’s festival of ideas, talks, and interactive performances to inspire people to change the future. It is their largest public event series and has attracted over 12,000 visitors since 2013. Nesta asked us to design and build a new website for the event that would best showcase the events and programme on offer, boosting awareness and ticket sales. Furthermore, the site would need to support the next three years of FutureFest including ad hoc and evening events.

Information architecture • Wireframing • Prototyping • Web design • Web build • Content migration

Preview of a few selected web design pages. Showcasing how graphical shapes merged together with imagery was used to give an digital presence. The web design also presented information, quotes and timings for the festival.
User interface showcasing a digital timeline of speakers and talks. It consist of title, time and date, a small summary and a range of colours to keep it with in brand.

We ran a kick-off meeting with the FutureFest team to ascertain the full scope of the website, the extent of the technical functionality needed, and the type of content it would contain. We developed the site’s information architecture to be as intuitive and clear as possible, with focus on easy access to information. From here, we were able to create wireframes of the pages and build a working prototype.

To bring the pages to life we built upon and adapted FutureFest’s existing brand, modernising their ‘glitch’ element for today, and in a way that would ensure it wouldn’t feel tired over coming years. As the client had so much event photography, the design is very imagery focused, with big type to clearly lead users through the site. We applied all designs to our prototype so that stakeholders could sign it off easily.

A series of portraits collaged together with digital inspire shapes and colours used for animation and social media too.

We built the site using Wordpress Gutenberg, opting for a modular system instead of templates to ensure a flexible and easily editable CMS for the client.

This resulted in a responsive site with clear event and speaker information, and smooth path to ticket purchasing.
