NESTA INNOVATION METHODS
Bringing good ideas to life
In its role as a global innovation foundation, Nesta uses its expertise, network and skills to fund and grow new ideas that can change the world for the better. Part of this is disseminating the appropriate knowledge and tools to the next generation of innovators, who will have a vast new range of opportunities compared to the last. To do this, Nesta created a Compendium of Innovation Methods with advice and case studies from their internal experts. We were asked to create a set of 14 animations to accompany each of the innovation methods—ranging from topics like ‘Anticipatory Regulation’ to ‘Innovation Mapping’.

In a truly collaborative process, we worked closely with each of the method owners to write scripts that would engage and draw audiences in, ultimately directing them to the more detailed Compendium entires. The tone of voice needed to straddle the line between credible and accessible, so as not to alienate new audiences or bore established ones. We had each script recorded to sound conversational but educated, using a professional voice actor.
As the Compendium already had its own visual identity, we decided it was best to carry this through to the videos for the sake of consistency and brand. Each video was storyboarded with input from Nesta to ensure that the concepts remained true to the source material but were still understandable. It was important for us to inject humour into the illustrations to offset the complexity of the methods.
The completed animations made use of curated sound effects to further bring the concepts to life. They have been shared on the Nesta website and social media accounts, as well as shown at exhibitions and conferences as a way of positioning Nesta as a world-leader in innovation methods.
